Homes for Homes, created by The Big Issue, raises funds for social and affordable housing through donations from the sale or rent of properties. Owners and renters register their property with Homes for Homes, promising to donate 0.1% of their property’s sale price or rent. Funds are then granted to community housing providers in the State or Territory of the donation to increase the delivery of safe and secure housing for those on the margins.
ADC_ Executive Director Rod Hamersley said the company has committed to providing 0.1% from its future apartment sales to Homes for Homes. In addition, apartments will be registered with Homes for Homes giving buyers an opportunity to donate also when they re-sell their home in future years.
“Homes for Homes is a fantastic nationwide program combating homelessness and ADC_ is proud to become an ongoing supporter of the initiative,” Mr Hamersley said.
ADC_ has more than 150 apartments across complexes in Mosman, Subiaco and Maylands in the advanced stages of planning, and a further 742 apartments approved for the Perth Girls School precinct in East Perth.
Homes for Homes COO Tracy Longo said partnering with ADC_ was an important step for the not-for-profit organisation in Western Australia.
“Through this partnership we hope to raise significant ongoing funding for programs that directly assist people in Western Australia struggling to find safe and secure accommodation,” Ms Longo said.
Homes for Homes has granted nearly $2 million in funding to projects across Australia. These projects provide housing for more than 350 people.
Ms Longo said homelessness is solved by creating safe, secure and permanent housing.
Australian Bureau of Statistics data collected during the 2021 Census show the overall number of people without a home in Western Australia grew from 9,005 in 2016 to 9,729 in 2021. Western Australia had the highest proportion of people in the country living in improvised dwellings, tents or sleeping out.1
Perth is also the hardest market in the country to find a rental property, with vacancy rates as low as 0.4% in July 2023.2
Homes for Homes Partnerships Manager WA Adrian Talbot said having a developer of the calibre of ADC_ on board will be of huge benefit to the programs the organisation supports in Western Australia.
“In Western Australia today it is harder than ever to find affordable and secure accommodation,” Mr Talbot said. “Whether it’s the cost or availability of rental accommodation, or people being priced out of home ownership, it’s the disadvantaged in our communities who suffer the most.
“It’s great to have a property developer like ADC_ committing to ongoing donations that support the creation of safe, secure and affordable housing for those on the margins.”
Homes for Homes is on track to raise more than $1 billion by 2030, all thanks to businesses and the community getting involved and registering their properties with Homes for Homes.
